Chicago, Illinois (AP) A Chicago soccer player has died after being struck by a car in a soccer field in the city’s north.
The death comes amid the national debate over playing on turf or grass in the United States and how to prevent head injuries.
Officials said the man was in his 20s and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The driver, who was not identified, was not injured.
The collision happened about 9:45 a.m.
Sunday on the city�s North Shore soccer field, according to Chicago Fire Soccer spokeswoman Lisa Johnson.
The man was sitting in a front seat when a vehicle drove up, Johnson said.
The man did not see the car until it crossed the median, she said.
The driver of the vehicle pulled away from the scene, and no other vehicles were involved, Johnson added.
