An American soccer ball weighing more than 200 kilograms (500 pounds) was sold for the world record price of $4,834,837 at auction in New York on Monday.

The New York State Lottery and Gaming Corporation, which operates the New York Lottery, sold the 9.6-ton (20-foot) ball at Christie’s for $40,000 (£29,500) on Saturday, the Associated Press news agency reported.

The winning bidder is unknown but the auction house said the winning bidder was a Canadian company called Nodeco.

Nodeco, founded in 2013 by former NBA star and current NBA All-Star, Carmelo Anthony, is known for making some of the world ‘s most expensive footballs.

The ball is one of seven sold by the company, which has more than 30 years of experience in the field of sports marketing.

Nathaniel Pincus, a spokesman for the Lottery Corporation, told the AP that the winning bid was $4m, which was “exceeded by several hundred thousand”.

“We’re thrilled to sell this world-class product, and to announce that the winner is Nodeco,” he said.

“This is a very unique product and we are thrilled that our friends at Christie do not only sell the best in sports, but also the best of all time.”

The auction house had initially expected to sell the ball at auction for $10m but “decided not to”, the AP reported.

“The company has been in negotiations with a potential buyer for several months and was able to negotiate the best price possible for this great product,” Mr Pincous said.

The Ball is the latest in a series of “cool” sports memorabilia.

In January, the New Jersey Devils signed a seven-year deal worth $250m with Adidas worth $1.5bn.

And in December, the Cleveland Browns signed a five-year, $100m contract with Nike worth $300m.
