Everton midfielder Kurtis Byrne will be suspended four matches for a headbutt on goalkeeper Brad Guzan on the bench at Preston North End.

The 22-year-old was sent off by Guzan at the end of the 2-1 win on Sunday after he was shown a straight red card.

He will miss the next three games of the season.

The match at Preston was Byrne’s second of the week and the second game against Preston he has been in the stands for.

Byrne was booked for a late challenge on Guzan after the winger had tried to score from a free kick.

Benny Whittaker has been promoted to the first team for the first time since December, while midfielder Scott Sinclair and defender Kevin Mirallas have also been promoted from the bench.
